Siren
What?
A geometrical outcast is sick of his mundane life in the world that was not designed for his needs. In a mundane fit of depressed melancholy he decides to journey away and escape this world in order to find somewhere new to rest his mind.
The film was made in collaboration with the music of a friend of mine, Olaf Stuut. He’s an Amsterdam based melodic house producer and after I heard his music I was more than pleased when he asked me to produce a music video for his song “Siren”. Siren is a reference to the mythical creatures that would lure sailors into the rocks with there beautiful hypnotic singing. The song has these very nice melodic vocal parts, in this case I decided to use the idea of the Circle in the sky as the “Siren”. It whats you originally think is maybe the sun but later turns out to be another planet that the character is aiming to reach.

Why?
The overriding theme is the circle over the square, I feel like we are constantly bombard with squares in day to day life. We sit inside our square buildings looking into to square screens watching our friends faces graphically trapped in square profiles. I feel like the circle is a sign of nature, the cycle of life and death. The square for me is a dead end, for man and monkey.
I think this story reflects the sort of alienation you feel once you leave your home, in my case it was moving to the Netherlands. I’v been living here for just over 2 years now and I still don’t speak dutch or even have much connection to the culture. However I wouldn’t say its something that depress’s me, more of a feeling of difference that in some ways is very beneficial to your understanding of people, places and sociology.

How?
All of the lines are completely produced by hand, with ink on paper. I’m still not convinced by digitalI lines within illustration. I made lots of looped animations and then digitally I composed them in a virtual 3D space so it was to possible to explore the idea of space around this minimal landscape.
Next Project
I’m really excited about my next project, I’m wanting to get more involved with character development and the subconscious mind of the random guy sitting on the bench in the park. Also it’s going to be part of my graduation this July in Amsterdam too, so I got some good solid pressure behind my back.
