Of Moths and Butterflies by Sarah Jones

Who?
Of Moths and Butterflies” is a solo project that I have worked on over the past six months as a final major animation for my course at Loughborough University, where I have been studying Visual Communication for the past three years.

What?
The animation tells the dark tale of two step-sisters, one cherished and the other neglected.

Why?
I have taken inspiration from studies into the relationship between fairytales and adult psychology to emphasise the theme that we are all products of our direct environments and the treatment we receive can shape the people we ultimately become.

How?
The puppets I created for the stop-motion are hand sculpted and painted. Through the designs I tried to emphasise the idea of love and neglect with one girl being almost angelic in the way she appears and the neglected child is a much less cared for version.

I also wanted to keep the general aesthetic of the film quite dark to convey atmosphere and used a mainly sepia-toned palette with the aim of creating a world of ‘murky-beauty’.

Next Project?
After graduating I will be working on my showreel and hope to find work within the animation industry.

Which animated film would you like to have made?
I absolutely adore the work of Suzie Templeton and would have loved to work alongside her producing Peter and the Wolf. I love the depth of emotion and detail within her work and I would definitely say that she is an inspiration to me.
