Broken: Rock Paper Scissors
Broken: Rock Paper Scissors by Gang Maria Yi, Garrett O’Neal and Bryan Locantore recent graduates from Ringling College of Art and Design’s computer animation program. Gang Maria Yi talks about the film below…
What?
“Broken: Rock, Paper, Scissors” is a student animated short film, produced at Ringling College of Art & Design. It’s our own visual representation of the children’s game, with the intent to portray the beauty and sacrifice that love creates. When Rock stumbles upon the magical Paper, it’s love at first sight. But when the wrath of Scissors threatens the well-being of Paper, Rock must stop at nothing to save what he loves most, no matter the cost.

Why & How?
We wanted to tell a story about something that everyone knows but with a hidden twist. we hugely focused on creating the film in the most creative ways we could possibly think of. We used multiple tools to create Broken. We started storyboarding and designing the film in Photoshop, from there we went to Zbrush to Model, and then Rigged and Animated in Maya. We then light the film using Pixar’s Renderman and composited it in Nuke. And to finish it all off we used Adobe Premiere to tie it all together.

What Next?
We all decided to pursue our career in a film industry and try to keep ourselves creative and passionate in anything we would work in the future. We love story telling, so if there is anything with a great story we would love to be part of that journey.
