Rio
Who?
My name is Monica Ahanonu, I am a graduate from the University of Southern California, where I majored in Animation & Digital Arts. My film is titled, ‘Rio’ and is Directed & Animated by myself (Monica Ahanonu), with Music Composed by Josh Cumbee.
What:
Rio is a visual music piece inspired by the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Rio focuses on contrast – shown through color & shape; heard through the music. The designs combine vibrant colors against muted background and you will notice an overarching shape design in each sport sequence. Rio creates an atmosphere of excitement.
Why?
Rio was created to excite the world for the 2016 Olympic Games by showing the different rhythms and movements of various Olympic sports. Rio showcases contagious energy, exuberant nature, harmonious diversity and Olympic spirit combined with musically linked designs to assist the audience in understanding the internal feelings of different athletes. Using abstraction, Rio displays the mindset of an athlete during competition by removing elements that are forgotten during those few moments of a performance. Iconic design language is used to show what is kept in focus while athletes are present their talents to the world.

Which film do you wish you could have made?
I couldn’t decide on a movie but going back through history but I would have loved the opportunity to work with Eyvind Earle or Saul Bass for a few months…or have a cup of coffee.
