The Race by Jodie Haslam, University of West England (UWE)

Who?

Director: Jodie Haslam
Music/Sound: Chris Reed

What?

Babies stand at the start of a race track. As they begin to run they morph and grow into more distinctive personalities. Some thrive and some falter as the race soon becomes deadly competitive.

How?

The Race was animated in Adobe Flash (CS5) with compositing done in After Effects. Due to the number of run cycles in the film, in my mind using Flash was the only way I could get the film completed on time with its great economical features.

Next Project?

I’m currently freelancing in Bristol as well as making my own content too. I’ve so far made 2 other short films and am working on another at the moment.

Which Film?

I’m Fine Thanks by Eamonn O’Neill – I saw it just before I started applying to universities and it really influenced my idea of modern animation. I love the slow build up and how the sense of anger and frustration is depicted in a way that only animation can do.
