Red
Red by Alexandre charleux, Ning Zhang, Victoria Bruneel, Amaury Brunet a graduation film from Supinfocom Valencienne.
Who?
The film is a graduation project made at Supinfocom Valencienne (FRANCE) by me and three other students (Alexandre charleux, Ning Zhang, Victoria Bruneel, Amaury Brunet). The sound part has been entirely designed by Pierre Caillet for the music, and Rodolphe Kay and Benoit Pallandre for the sound design and sound editing. They helped a lot the project as it was a real exchange between us during the whole production.
What?
In the dark districts of the metropolis, a mysterious serial killer strikes down red dressed women. Del, a crime scene photographer, has lost his own wife in the human hecatomb. Through the silence of the streets at night, he is about to encounter the next victim, followed by a strange man…
Why?
During the early stages of development of the film we knew that we needed strong visuals to support the narration because it was intended not to have voiced characters. So everything had to be said by the image, music and sound effects only. Plus we wanted the film to be sort of a graphical experience. So we were inspired by major pieces of german expressionism such as Metropolis obviously and The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari. But as we wanted to give the film a more “current gen” look, we had a deep look at the pieces that was inspired by that kind of cinema, and found our main source of inspiration in the stunning work of Ashley Wood.
How?
The film was made using a mix a techniques. Basicaly, this animation is a full CGI film, using the 3D softwares to make the backgrounds and characters come to life. But as we wanted to develop a really strong artistic direction for the project we just couldn’t use the traditionnal ways of 3D animated films. So we worked on each shot to upgrade the mood, the lights, and the global composition by adding new handpainted details, mattepaintings, stockhots and fx to densify the atmosphere, and reshaping lights and colors by hand with compositing editors. It was a really long process but we finaly got the visual we wanted that way.
Next Project?
Alexandre Charleux : I am currently working for the new Capcom video game franchise “Remember Me” developed at Dontnod Entertainment. I’m also working on several personal projects, a graphic novel I hope to achieve this year, and a short animated film I’m still developing.
Amaury Brunet : I just achieved “Dessine moi un Bouton”, a short film directed by Gary Lebel. I’m currently working as freelance on several game trailers/fan films on Diablo and Deadspace. I’m also working on personnal projects, a webserie and a sci-fi trilogy currently in writing process.
Victoria Bruneel : After some work in CG studios in Bruxelles, I’m currently writing an humoristic full-length animated film. I’m working on the graphic file, waiting for the financial assitance that the SCAM offers to artists. I hope to be able to send the completed file to the committee of the Centre du Cinema of the Wallonie Bruxelles Federation and to the CNC in order to find some financing or producer.
Which animated film would you like to have made?
Alexandre Charleux : One of the animation project that really thrilled those last years and I’d love to work on, is the animated film The Goon, produced at Blur Studio by Davind Fincher from the graphic novel by Eric Powell. Unfortunately, after an amazing trailer released three years ago, the project seems to be canceled.
Amaury Brunet : Without any hesitation, Avatar. As a sci fi fan, photorealistic job lover, this film will remain my favourite in this domain for a while. In an other style, Tangled would be my second choice.
