Jackie and Kevin 1977
Jackie and Kevin 1977 – Daisy Gould
Who?
The film was made just by me, apart from the music which was done by a great composer called David Pasqualini.
What?
Jackie and Kevin 1977 is semi-autobiographical exploration of memory, shared experiences and imagination, triggered by a real piece of graffiti left in a drawer in my halls room at university.
Why?
This was my graduation film from the University of Wales, Newport. From the first time I saw the graffiti I started thinking that Jackie and Kevin might be the subject of my third year film, because the whole idea of them fascinated me. I really did write “I am going to make a film about them” in the drawer too. I was inspired by a really diverse range of things, but probably the biggest for this film were Jean Michel Basquiat, Maira Kalman and the film ‘Six Weeks In June’ by Stuart Hilton.
How?
It’s made using hand-drawn 2D animation. For the collage backgrounds I spent a long time collecting things that were either from 1977 or looked like they could be, including old newspapers, local maps and wallpaper patterns, and these were assembled and animated, along with painted sections I made, on Photoshop.
Next project?
I’m currently making a music video for a friend. I’m also gradually working up to starting another short film I’ve been planning for a few months, that’s still in the writing stages currently.
