La Maison de Gramma
La Maison de Gramma by Gabriel Franklin of the Parsons New School for Design. Gabriel discusses the short below
Who?
I am fully responsible for the animation itself, except for the soundtrack which was created by the talented Carlo Tamponi. I also had the help of my animation professor Glenn LaVertu with the storytelling and other visual aspects of the film.
What?
“La Maison de Gramma” is a black and white animated story that hides within every grandmother’s house. With a sweet and light atmosphere, it presents an old lady’s peculiar house and the way her life is portrayed by the many picture frames on the walls.
Why?
Actually, the main character was inspired by my own grandmother who loves to collect all sorts of family photographs. One of the most vivid memories of my childhood was the amount of picture frames she used to put all over her house. That sort of sweet and nostalgic memory is what I wanted to portray with this short film.
About the animator who inspire me the most, I have to say Glen Keane. His work is so delicate yet full of life and he is genius when it comes to animation and character design.

How?
This short film was created during the Parsons The New School for Design animation summer intensive studies. This means that I had only three weeks to get it done which was a big challenge for me. I mixed hand drawn and digital animation and I decided to stick to the black and white visual because I thought it would match well with the animation’s message.
Next Project?
I have just finished this film and I am starting to think about other animation projects I might start. I love creating animated shorts and I will most probably keep on exploring the many possibilities of animation.

Which animated film would you like to have made?
I am really inspired by the classic Disney movies, specially “Mulan”. It is such a powerful piece and they managed to stick to the context of the plot from beginning to end of the animation process which I think it is a important aspect.
