The Man Who Saw A Boat
The Man Who Saw A Boat by Henrique Barone, Henrique’s short was created whilst studying at the Vancouver Film School, and tells us about the short below…
Who?
Henrique Barone: Creator and Director
Daniel Simmons: Music
Jonathan Bonder and Luis Orlando Ruiz: Sound Design and Mix
What?
“The life of a man living under water is questioned when a boat floats over his head”.
Why?
THE MAN WHO SAW A BOAT has a lot of music influences. Songs like Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, Morning has broken by Cat Stevens and specially lyrics from Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash have influenced the story a lot. I also love to watch shorts films online, so visual influences are all over. From independent, personal and student films to Motion Graphic pieces such as those done by studios like Punga, Plenty or Buck are also very inspirational.

How?
The short is mix of 3D Character Animation in a 2D environment. It was produced in the 6 months of the Digital Character Animation program at Vancouver Film School. The idea started being developed since the very first day; the first four months I worked on Character Design, Modeling and Rigging and the last 2 months were set up for Animation (both 2D and 3D) and Compositing.
Next Project?
Now I’m working as a freelance animator from studios in Brazil and Canada, but most of all I’m promoting THE MAN WHO SAW A BOAT in animation festivals and also online.
Which animated film would you like to have made?
That’s hard! On a personal level I’ll have to say “The Lion King”. If I think that this is a very touching movie even nowadays, imagine when I was a kid. But I’m also thinking about Paranorman. Stop-motion is a technique I really admire and I don’t have experience with, so I would love to get involved in a film like Paranorman. In the short film field I would love to do any of the 50’s shorts, especially those directed by Chuck Jones and Tex Avery.
