Rekindle

Rekindle by Andreea Stan, recent graduate from Southampton Solent University.

What?
Rekindle. Start new or start from the point where you left it. Set in a surreal world, between the bottom of the ocean and the waves under a night sky, “Rekindle” talks about love, memory, loss and longing, about falling in love twice with the same person, despite the fact that first time it didn’t really work. “You can call it lust… for love”.

Why?
The film was inspired by movies like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Amelie”, but also by animators like Julia Pott, Stephen Irwin and Erick Oh.

How?
I find 3D animation quite cold and soulless and I believe that hand drawings, with all their mistakes, smudges and faulty shapes carry more emotional weight and can tell more about the artist’s personality, therefore I chose a 2D environment for my film. Everything in it is drawn on paper, then scanned in and coloured in Photoshop. With the music I was helped by the brilliant Rich Barker and Craig Collis, both music students at the time. The voice was provided by Les Buckingham.

Next Project?
I will soon start an artist residency with Solent Showcase Gallery. During this residency I will be working on a new short film, titled “Unsent”. Just like “Rekindle”, it will be focused on themes as memory and loss.

Which film do you wish you could have made?
I would love to have made “My First Crush” by Julia Pott. Her work is absolutely brilliant!
