Fragile

Who?

My name is Bijan Shahir, and I did everything from concept to clean line. I had help from a few second years(Charlie, Sanaz) and some fellow 4th year friends(Nooree, Nichole) for colouring the cels.

What?

Two crewmates aboard a ship encounter a strange and unexpected problem with a box of cargo.

Why?

The movie ‘Alien’ was the initial inspiration for the film and the films ‘From Beyond’ and ‘Reanimator’ were inspirations for the colour choices. In terms of animators and artists that influenced me, all things Gobelins (and the French in general) inspire me. Nelson Boles. Osamu Tezuka, Tove Jansson and Johnny Ryan are also on that list.

How?

Some of the preproduction was done traditionally using pencils, pens, inks and watercolour, but it was done digitally for the most part. The animation was done completely digitally using the program Flipbook, with a healthy dose of After Effects and Photoshop for the backgrounds.

Next Project

I have something bouncing around my head and sketchbooks right now that involves a samurai, but that’s all I’ll say for now.

What Animated Film do I wish I could have made?

‘Spirited Away’, hands down. If I could have that movie attributed to me, I think I’d be happy for a few lifetimes.
