Showcase of 2014: The Legend of the Flying Tomato
The submissions to our student showcase always amaze us, such incredible new talent producing brilliant short films around the world. We spent the Christmas and New Year going through all those that hit the site in 2014 to select a Student Showcase of 2014 and we picked the awesome short Legend of the Flying Tomato by Michael Yates, Sharon Huang, and Aurry Tan. What?
Once a victim of bullying, Frida finds a hero in the legendary luchador, El Pirana. However she finds herself at her lowest once more when she’s ridiculed during the biggest wrestling match of her life. Through an unexpected meeting with a mysterious taco salesman, Frida learns that she must find strength in herself to overcome her demons.
Why?
The film was inspired by our common love of Quentin Tarantino and action packed films with heart such as The Incredibles.
How?
The film was made over about 9months time using Autodesk Maya, Zbrush, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, and Pixars Renderman. It was produced at Ringling College of Art and Design as our senior thesis project.
Next Project?
Currently we are all joining the animation industry, Michael is headed to DreamWorks as a Story artist, Sharon is a cg generalist at Gentalman’s Scholar, and Aurry is a Lighting/compositing intern at Laika/House. In our free time we are brainstorming new ideas.
