Our Picks: Oh My
A starry night, tracks in the snow. A girl desperately pursues a creature into a desolate, surreal, white landscape. This music video for the Australian band The Animators was created with painted plastic cut-outs and tissue paper and animated one frame at a time on a multi-plane animation stand.
From January to March 2016 I was happy to work on this ambitious project, a music video for the touching and beautiful song “Oh My”, by the Melbourne-based band The Animators. The band was attracted to my hand-made style, and we quickly settled on a concept. Something about the song reminded me of a desperate search, a moment of danger, and a happy, but ambiguous resolution.
I created the environments out of tissue paper and card, and lots of articulated and replaceable puppets by painting plastic. These were then placed on a back-lit multi-plane animation stand (a structure that holds a camera pointed downward through multiple layers of glass) and animated at mostly 12 frames per second. – Director Tess Martin
