VFX Legend Harryhausen Dies aged 92
The “King of stop-motion animation” Ray Harryhausen has died at the age of 92. Talk to any animator and it is not long before Harryhausen is cited as an inspiration in their work, or as there earliest memory of the art form. The Oscar-winner is best known for his work on the 1963 film “Jason And The Argonauts” and 1981’s “Clash Of The Titans”.
Raymond Frederick Harryhausen was born in L.A on the 29th June 1920, his fascination with animated models began when he first saw “King Kong” in 1933, and he made his first foray into filmmaking in 1935 with home-movies largely inspired by science fiction literature. Over the next 46 years Harryhausen worked on a host of films, which Steven Speilberg, Nick Park, Peter Jackson, James Cameron and many more all cite the Oscar winner as crucial to their own development as artists.
“Harryhausen’s genius was in being able to bring his models alive,” said an official statement from his foundation, a genius that has inspired many to follow in his footsteps and will continue to inspire for many years more.
