Titmouse Animation Inc. have just launched a new pilot “Yoyotoki HappyEars” for Amazon. “Yoyotoki” is a weird, delightful new show from creator Niki Yang who plays the voice of BMO and Rainicorn on “Adventure Time,” so you know that even though it’s a kid’s show it’s gonna be absurd enough for adults…and it absolutely is. Hello, can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello, my name is Niki, I’m currently working as a supervising director on Clarence. But I’m mainly known as the voice of Beemo and Lady rainicorn, and also Candy chiu.

Can you tell as a bit about ‘Yoyotoki HappyEars’?

Yoyotoki HappyEars is a young female fox who grew up in a world much like our own. She was raised with cell phones, computers, and all of the other gadgets and trappings of modern life. But Yoyotoki’s parents soon got tired of the rat race and decided to move to the countryside. On the journey there, they encountered a tornado and found themselves in a strange land called Mytholopia. Mytholopia is a beautiful world filled with waterfall farms, rainbow forests, desert canyons, etc. It is populated with mythical creatures like Pegasus, medusas, griffins, but no foxes. It is in this fantastical place that Yoyotoki will come of age. Just like us, she will experience all of the highs and lows of adolescence: heartbreak, friendship, figuring out who you are, etc. However, unlike us, she’ll do it alongside pegasus and a gummy bear.

What inspired ‘Yoyotoki’?

My 12 year old niece, who is somewhat insecure about who she is. I would like to encourage kids to be comfortable with themselves. Because they are wonderful just as they are…they just can’t see it yet!

Whose your favourite characters in the series and why?

Yoyotoki, because she is vulnerable yet fearless. And ya, she’s dang cute!:)

What challenges have you encountered in creating ‘Yoyotoki’?

Dealing with busy schedule. I have a full time job, that requires full brain power. It was a challenge to keep both projects running at the same time.

Where does your overall inspiration come from?

Everyday life. Interaction with and observations of people and animals..and my surroundings.

Where do you come up with your best creative ideas?

Doodles. My ideas always start from a glimpse of an image.

How did you get into animation / the industry?

It was harsh year when I graduated from Calarts. I stepped into the industry as a production assistance.Then I took a revisionist test. Lucky me, I became a revisionist 2-3 weeks after I started the job.

What advice would you pass on to those seeking to get into animation / the industry?

People always look for ‘fresh’ and they now have convenient ways to look for them. Develop your own style and voice. Post them on the web. Be consistent, keep pureness and insanity.
